Follow-Up: Texas Holds Off No. 7 Ole Miss 34-27: Longhorns Survive 24-3 Lead Erased as Manning Accounts for Three Touchdowns

In Austin, Travis County, Texas, the Texas Longhorns held off the No. 7 Ole Miss Rebels 34-27 on the night of October 24 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, snapping a two-game losing streak. The scoring by quarters was 10-3, 14-0, 0-14 and 10-10.

Texas entered the game 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), having lost consecutive 27-24 games to Oklahoma and Florida after rising to No. 1 in the national polls earlier this season. It was the first meeting between Texas and 5-1 Ole Miss since 2013, and their first as SEC opponents.

The first half belonged to the home team. After Gianni Spetic opened the scoring with a 23-yard field goal and Ole Miss kicker Lucas Carneiro answered from 46 yards, quarterback Arch Manning ran for a 2-yard touchdown — his first rushing score of the season — to make it 10-3. In the second quarter Manning hit Ryan Wingo on a 50-yard touchdown pass and Michael Terry III added a 2-yard rushing score, sending Texas to halftime up 24-3.

The game turned in the third quarter. Blake Purchase sacked Manning and forced a fumble that Kam Franklin recovered in the end zone for a defensive touchdown, and Trinidad Chambliss then found Horatio Fields on a 6-yard touchdown pass as Ole Miss outscored Texas 14-0 in the quarter. Early in the fourth, Chambliss and Fields connected again, this time from 27 yards, tying the game 24-24 and erasing a 21-point deficit.

Texas answered on the ground: an 80-yard drive made up entirely of running plays ended with Manning's second rushing touchdown, a 1-yard score, for a 31-24 lead. The Longhorns' defense then blocked Carneiro's 58-yard field goal attempt, and Spetic's 33-yard field goal with about two and a half minutes left restored a 10-point margin.

Ole Miss kept fighting: Carneiro's 39-yard field goal with about 1:20 remaining cut it to 34-27, the Rebels recovered the onside kick and drove to the Texas 29, but the final possession ended without a touchdown.

Manning accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) but also lost the fumble returned for a defensive score and threw a fourth-quarter interception to Jalyn Crawford. Texas also lost wide receiver Cam Coleman, who hurt his shoulder on a catch early in the third quarter, and left tackle Trevor Goosby during the game; the Longhorns were already without edge rushers Colin Simmons and Richard Wesley and running back Hollywood Smothers.

The win keeps Texas in the SEC and College Football Playoff race, while Ole Miss takes its second loss of the season.
