Follow-Up: Portuguese Police Clear Lisbon Housing Protest Camp Again, Arresting 25

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · World · GSM News

Portuguese police cleared a housing protest camp in Lisbon's Rossio Square in the early hours of October 25, baton-charging demonstrators and arresting 25 people, Reuters reported. Dozens of officers, some with police dogs, moved in shortly after 2 a.m., dismantling more than 100 tents pitched after Saturday's march by thousands along one of the capital's main avenues. Police said the operation was "proportionate"; those arrested for disobedience were later released and are due in court on Monday. A smaller camp of about 50 tents in Porto's Praça D. João I was also dismantled, with six arrests.

It was the latest clearance of housing protest camps in the two cities.

Portugal is grappling with one of Europe's most acute home affordability crises: prices have more than doubled since 2017 and rents for new leases have nearly doubled, with young people among the hardest hit. "We have an obligation to fight for what we believe in," said Vitor Gomes, 21, a multimedia communications student, adding that housing speculation, wealth concentration and rising inequality made him pessimistic about the future.
