Maui Previews 120th Anniversary Celebration of Filipinos in Hawai'i on Oct. 25 Ahead of Dec. 20 Sakada Day Event

On Sunday, October 25, Maui, Hawai'i held a preview event building up to the celebration of the 120th anniversary of Filipinos in Hawai'i. The main celebration is set for December 20 — in 2015, then-Governor David Ige signed Act 007 into law, establishing December 20 as Sakada Day. The December event, themed “Sakada Sacrifices… Our Future,” is presented by the Bahay Kubo Heritage Foundation and Binhi at Ani.
The sakadas were the Filipino contract laborers who came to work on Hawai'i's sugar plantations, with the first group arriving in 1906. The preview event unveiled an original painting by Maui artist Philip Sabado, commissioned by Tante and Tilie Urban — both descendants of sakadas — which will be used as part of the statewide 120th anniversary celebration. Hawaii News Now's Annalissa Burgos hosted the preview event, and Alfredo G. Evangelista served as the contact for the event.
Filipinos are one of Hawai'i's major ethnic communities. The 120-year commemoration is a reminder that Hawai'i's multicultural character was shaped by the labor and perseverance of generations of immigrants.
