Portland: City Screens 'Elk' Documentary on Oct. 25, Telling the Return of a Downtown Landmark

On October 25, the City of Portland held a special screening of the documentary "Elk" downtown. Directed by local filmmaker Erika Bolstad, the film tells the story of the Thompson Elk sculpture, which was removed during the 2020 protests and, six years later, was restored and returned to downtown. The screening was sponsored by the Portland Monuments Project, and was followed by a downtown monuments walking tour, taking audiences to see several monuments in person, including the Thompson Elk. The film not only documents the sculpture's restoration process, but also explores, through the voices of artists, historians and community members, whose stories deserve to be commemorated in public space.
