New York's Lower East Side Hosts a Sukkot and Mid-Autumn Family Program on October 25: Mooncakes Tell a Chinese Immigrant Story

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · City · GSM News

From 10 to 11:30 a.m. on October 25, the Tenement Museum on New York's Lower East Side held a family program celebrating Sukkot and the Mid-Autumn Festival, for children ages 5 to 12 and their families. Through the stories of a Jewish family in the 1910s and a Chinese family in the 1970s, the program showed how each family celebrated harvest holidays in their new urban home. Through storytelling and sweet treats, including mooncakes from Chinese bakeries, participants learned about the customs and meanings of both festivals. The museum said the event, part of its family program series, helps children understand, through the everyday details of two families, how immigrant households keep festival traditions alive abroad and give them new meaning in a new community. The program took place at 103 Orchard Street in Manhattan; tickets were $15 for adults, $5 for children and $7.50 for members. For Chinese families in New York, it was a weekend outing where children could hear a Chinese immigrant story and taste mooncakes inside a museum.
