Hawaii County Fire Commission Selects Daniel Volpe as Next Fire Chief, Formal Appointment Set for November 12

The County of Hawaii Fire Commission has voted to select Daniel Volpe as the next chief of the Hawaii Fire Department. Volpe, previously deputy chief, has served as interim chief since Fire Chief Kazuo Todd passed away in December 2025, and has been with the department for more than 20 years in roles including firefighter, fire medical specialist, and battalion chief. A 23-year resident of Hawaii Island, he relocated from Las Vegas in 2003 and is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The commission selected Volpe after holding public interviews with six candidates in Hilo. Volpe said he was honored by the commission's trust and would continue leading the island's firefighters in serving the public with dedication and aloha. Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda thanked the commission for an open and transparent selection process.
The appointment remains contingent on a pre-employment medical examination, drug screening, and proof of a valid driver's license, with formal appointment tentatively scheduled for the commission's November 12 meeting. The department handles fire suppression, rescue, and emergency response across the island.
