Idaho Fish and Game Seeks Comment Through October 28 on E-Tagging and Chronic Wasting Disease Rules

Idaho Fish and Game is seeking public comment on two proposed hunting-management rules, with the comment period running through October 28. The Fish and Game Commission is scheduled to vote on both proposals at its November 17-18 meeting. The first proposal would expand electronic tagging to certain game birds, letting hunters validate tags electronically instead of carrying paper tags that can fade, wash out, or be lost. The second targets chronic wasting disease, the fatal neurological disease affecting deer, elk, and moose.
The second proposal would let the department manage chronic wasting disease zones by individual game management unit, making it illegal to move a whole carcass between units within the same management zone — whether hunted or salvaged — because current rules allow moving whole carcasses that may contain brain or spinal tissue.
The department stresses that e-tagging is entirely voluntary and hunters who prefer paper tags may keep using them. Staff will review all comments and make recommendations to the commission; if approved, the rules will advance to pending status.
