Arizona Joins Nevada's Lawsuit over Federal Colorado River Plan; Interior and Reclamation Must Respond by Late October

An October 25 report said Arizona has joined Nevada's lawsuit against the federal government's Colorado River water plan. Under the litigation schedule, the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Reclamation must respond to Nevada's original complaint by the end of October 2026; the case could take years and may ultimately reach the Supreme Court, and no hearing date has been set.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, speaking in southern Arizona this week, warned that "the last thing Arizona wants is a judge deciding where the water flows." Representative Greg Stanton defended Arizona's position, noting that the current plan would cut Arizona's allocation by about 30 percent over the next two years, that the Lower Basin bears a disproportionate share of the cuts, and that the Upper Basin faces no comparable mandatory reductions.
