Quaker Oats plant explosion in Cedar Rapids: PepsiCo says no injuries, cause still under investigation

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · States · GSM News

On October 25, the Quaker Oats plant explosion and fire in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, saw a new development: parent company PepsiCo confirmed to media that no one was injured and that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The incident occurred at about 4:45 p.m. on October 24, when Cedar Rapids fire and police responded to a 'fire and explosion' call and found heavy smoke and flames on the plant's north side, beginning personnel accountability and firefighting efforts. By about 6:55 p.m. the fire was under control but not fully out, with crews still working on interior overhaul. Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell said on social media that all workers on site had evacuated safely and no one was hurt; the fire broke out in a product-handling area that is usually lightly staffed, which proved fortunate. The Cedar Rapids plant is described as the world's largest milling facility of its kind, and fire units from Marion, Hiawatha and Linn County also responded. As of October 25, fire officials had not announced a cause for the explosion and fire.
