In the early hours of October 25, a Salisbury, Maryland, man was arrested on suspicion of setting fire to his own home. According to a deputy state fire marshal, the fire broke out at 5:35 p.m. on October 24 in a single-story home in the 6000 block of Hunters Mill Drive in Salisbury; 40 firefighters responded and brought the blaze under control within 30 minutes, but losses were estimated at about $175,000. The Hebron Volunteer Fire Department asked the State Fire Marshal to investigate; investigators determined the fire originated in an attached garage and was deliberately set. The suspect was identified as the 66-year-old homeowner, Michael Satterfield, and a deputy state fire marshal served the arrest warrant in the early hours of October 25 while Satterfield was already held at the Wicomico County Detention Center on related traffic charges. Satterfield faces charges of first- and second-degree arson, first- and second-degree malicious burning, arson threat, intoxicated endangerment, reckless endangerment and five counts of animal cruelty — he allegedly left five cats inside when he set the fire; firefighters found all five cats unharmed after extinguishing the blaze. If convicted on all counts he faces more than 72 years in prison and over $105,000 in fines; a judge has ordered him held without bail at the Wicomico County Detention Center.
