Maine marks third anniversary of Lewiston shooting: governor orders flags at half-staff, Bates College holds candlelight remembrance

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · States · GSM News

October 25 marked the third anniversary of the Lewiston, Maine, shooting. Governor Janet Mills ordered U.S. and state flags across Maine flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in memory of the 18 people killed and 13 survivors of the October 25, 2023 attack. At 4:00 p.m., Bates College in Lewiston held a remembrance service in Gomes Chapel, where students, faculty, staff and community members honored the dead with silence and readings. Multifaith fellow Benny VanDerBurgh opened and closed the service and thanked first responders, including Bates emergency services personnel; three decorated tables held photographs and candles for each victim, student representatives shared their experiences of the aftermath and the community's cohesion, and the service included five minutes of silence and a passing of candlelight — a tradition since the first remembrance in 2023, symbolizing unity and shared grief — before closing with a violin performance. In addition, the Maine MILL museum in Lewiston mounted a third-anniversary exhibit preserving the flowers, candles and artwork the community left in mourning after the shooting.
