NHL Foundation holds girls' hockey clinic in Newark on October 25; 30 girls take the ice

On October 25, the NHL Foundation and Hockey New Jersey jointly hosted a girls' hockey clinic at the Ironbound Recreation Center in Newark, where 30 girls ages 6 to 16 put on gear and took the ice. The clinic was led by Olympic gold medalist and NHL Foundation ambassador Haley Scamurra, with New York Sirens forward Ally Hartje also coaching; the girls spent about an hour on drills and small scrimmages, learning fundamentals and teamwork. The organizers also donated $50,000 to the program to grow youth hockey locally. Scamurra said the point of the clinic is to help the next generation fall in love with the sport the way she did — that the most important thing is getting out of the house, having fun and picking up a thing or two; Hartje said seeing children choose to come to the rink on a Saturday morning is itself the greatest reward for a coach. Grassroots clinics like this, aimed at girls, have become an important part of expanding participation in American women's hockey in recent years.
