First Nashville Jazz Festival closes October 25 with Kirk Whalum headlining the finale night

On October 25, the first Nashville Jazz Festival reached its second and closing day at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville. Organized by the Nashville Jazz Workshop and held October 24-25, the festival's founders hope to make it a new Nashville tradition. The October 25 lineup ran in order: David Williford at 5:30 p.m., Chester Thompson at 6:15, Rod McGaha at 7:00, and headliner Kirk Whalum at 8:00, playing past 9:30. Whalum, known for a tenor saxophone sound rooted in Memphis gospel music, rose over decades from sideman to bandleader and was the night's most anticipated name. Single-day tickets were $30 and a two-day pass $45; the first festival mixed local standouts with national artists deeply tied to the local scene, giving Nashville's Sunday night a world-class jazz gathering.
