San Juan River flooding forces evacuations in southeast Utah on October 25; US-160 bridge closed

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · States · GSM News

On October 25, flooding struck the San Juan River basin in southeastern Utah. The Navajo Police Department reported that the U.S. 160 bridge over the San Juan River remained closed to traffic that day, the Montezuma Creek bridge was also closed, and residents of Bluff, Montezuma Creek and Aneth were evacuating. The National Weather Service office in Grand Junction warned on October 25 of possible catastrophic flooding on the San Juan River between Four Corners and Mexican Hat, with waters expected to crest around Aneth, Montezuma Creek and Bluff that afternoon and evening. Responders set up a command post at Aneth Community School, with shelters at Aneth Community School and San Juan High School in Blanding; residents needing evacuation help could call Montezuma Creek EMS. Police warned evacuated residents not to return home, and the weather service cautioned against crossing the river, as low-water crossings were submerged and potentially impassable.
