USDA Official Visits Rural Hospital in Decorah, Iowa, Where $700,000 Grant Funds a Surgical Robot

Glenn Smith, Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, visited Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, on October 25 to see firsthand how federal funding is improving rural health care. He was joined by U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson and Mike Sexton, the USDA Rural Development state director for Iowa.

Winneshiek Medical Center has received a $700,000 award through the USDA's Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant Program to install a surgical robot, improve the quality of care, and help shorten average hospital stays for surgical patients. Smith said rural communities deserve modern medical facilities and equipment so residents can receive safe, high-quality care close to home, and that the federal government is investing in health projects nationwide to ensure rural areas have reliable, sustainable care.

The new equipment will expand the hospital's capacity, help recruit medical staff and retain surgeons, and improve health care across Winneshiek County and surrounding rural areas. Sexton said rural communities need modern infrastructure for individuals and families to settle down and thrive. For a small city like Decorah, a surgical robot is more than a piece of equipment — it is a key step in keeping doctors, and patients, in town.
