Louisiana Redistricting Case Returns to Court October 27 as Civil Rights Group Rallies Support for Last Majority-Black District

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Legal Defense Fund announced on October 25 that it will bring supporters to court on October 27 for the latest hearing in Louisiana v. Callais, urging the court to dismiss the newest challenge to the state's last remaining majority-Black congressional district. The case previously eliminated one of Louisiana's two majority-Black districts, and the same plaintiffs have now turned to challenging the one that remains.

The Legal Defense Fund said the October 27 day of action will begin inside the courtroom, where supporters will watch whether the judge dismisses the latest lawsuit; afterward, co-counsel and plaintiffs will speak outside the courthouse, followed by community organizing to drive turnout on the final day of early voting. The organization stressed that the voices of Black Louisianans will not be erased.

Louisiana's congressional map has been among the most closely watched legal fights ahead of the midterm elections, with every change to the district lines directly affecting Black voters' representation. October 27 is both the day the court decides on dismissal and the last day of early voting in the state, where the legal battle and the election converge. Organizers are calling on supporters to "pack the court" to show that the public is watching the case.
