Season's First Major Snow Forecast to Cover Montana: Hazardous Travel Possible on October 26

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · States · GSM News

A weather forecast issued on the evening of October 25 showed the first sizable snowfall of the autumn closing in on the Rocky Mountains and the Plains, with Montana among the states affected and hazardous road conditions possible starting Monday, October 26.

According to the October 25 AccuWeather forecast, a push of cold air southward will spread snow beyond the highest terrain, with parts of South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana and Colorado all possibly seeing accumulation. The forecast said the Black Hills of South Dakota are the most likely area for accumulating snow, and Rapid City could see its first wintry mix of the season; snow is also possible from eastern Wyoming and northwestern Nebraska to southwestern North Dakota.

Montana residents and through-drivers should check conditions before traveling on Monday: even if snowfall totals are modest, slick roads and reduced visibility during the season's first snow can still be dangerous. Denver and most of the Colorado River Basin are expected to escape the heaviest precipitation in this round, but travelers in Montana and the surrounding Plains should prepare for delays and slow going, and check official road reports before setting out.
