The 62nd Chicago International Film Festival announced the winners of its competition sections on October 23 in Chicago: 'The Dreamed Adventure,' directed by Germany's Valeska Griesbach, won the Gold Hugo for Best Film in the International Feature Film Competition, and its star Yana Radeva also won Best Performance. The festival ran from October 14 to 25 at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago, with 46 feature films and 57 shorts competing across its sections.

Other top International Feature awards went to Sandra Wollner's 'Everytime,' which won the Silver Hugo Jury Prize, with Lotte Shirin Keiling winning Best Supporting Performance; Marine Atlan won Best Director for 'La Gradiva,' which also won Best Ensemble Performance; Ryûsuke Hamaguchi and Léa Le Dimna won Best Screenplay for 'All of a Sudden'; Senzo Ueno won Best Cinematography for Hirokazu Kore-eda's 'Look Back'; and Paolo Strippoli's 'The Spiral' won Best Visual Effects. The festival noted that 'The Dreamed Adventure,' 'All of a Sudden,' 'Everytime,' and 'The Spiral' are all their countries' official entries for Best International Feature at the 2027 Academy Awards.

In the New Directors Competition, the Gold Hugo went to Haitian filmmaker Gessica Généus's 'Marie Madeleine,' about a fiercely independent sex worker and the son of an evangelical preacher, while the Silver Hugo went to Polish director Grzegorz Dębowski's 'What Belongs to Others.' The International Documentary Competition Gold Hugo went to Alessandra Sanguinetti's 'The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer,' filmed over 25 years as it follows two Argentine cousins from adolescence into adulthood; the Silver Hugo went to Laura Cazador's 'Tricontinental, Letter to Open in Case Of.' In the OutLook Competition, the Gold Q-Hugo went to Céline Carridroit and Aline Suter's 'Summer Drift' and the Silver Q-Hugo to Ira Sachs' 'The Man I Love.' The Chicago Award went to Arlieta Hall and Brittany Alsot's documentary 'Finding Your Laughter.' Gold Hugos in the shorts sections went to Manu Zilveti's 'Gill' (live action), Kim Yeonwoo's 'Fingerbang' (animation), and Bill Morrison's 'Sawyer Avenue, Sunday Afternoon' (documentary).

Artistic Director Mimi Plauché said this year's winning films show how much cinema can reveal about lives and ways of seeing the world beyond one's own, and noted that all four Gold Hugos and the Chicago Award went to women filmmakers. Founded in 1965, the Chicago festival is North America's longest-running competitive film festival; this year's closing film, Tony Gilroy's 'Behemoth!,' screens on October 25.
