Follow-Up: Laika's Wildwood Opens With $4.3 Million Day One, Tracking for $11-12 Million Weekend
Laika's stop-motion feature Wildwood earned $4.3 million on its opening day in North America from 2,752 locations, placing third on Friday and tracking for an $11-12 million opening weekend, TheWrap reported on October 24.
The film holds a 100% critics score and 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an A CinemaScore. TheWrap noted the opening would be consistent with the $12.6 million debut of Laika's Kubo and the Two Strings in 2016, but that Wildwood's budget, reported to be well above $100 million and funded privately by Nike founder Phil Knight — father of Laika founder and Wildwood director Travis Knight — means the film will not recoup its costs theatrically on this trajectory.
Directed by Travis Knight and based on Colin Meloy's novel, Wildwood features the voices of Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, and Awkwafina, and is distributed in North America by Fathom Entertainment. It opened on October 23. GSM previously covered the film's release and production; this report follows its opening box office.
