“Klara and the Sun,” adapted from the novel by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro, opened in the United States and the United Kingdom on October 23, released by Sony Pictures through its Columbia Pictures label. The film premiered at the 70th BFI London Film Festival on October 15.

Taika Waititi directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Dahvi Waller; Ishiguro serves as an executive producer. Jenna Ortega stars as Klara, a solar-powered “Artificial Friend” who waits in a shop window to be chosen and is bought for Josie (Mia Tharia), a sick young girl. Amy Adams plays Josie's mother Chrissie, with Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne also in the cast. The film runs 116 minutes, is rated PG-13, and features a score by Michael Giacchino.

According to published reports, the release was initially planned for more than 2,000 theaters but was scaled back to about 850 theaters following poor early critical reception, with an opening weekend of roughly $2 million projected.
