Luka Doncic Scores 52 Points and 10 Assists as Lakers Rally Past Jazz 132-123 to Improve to 3-0, Setting Several Franchise Marks
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Utah Jazz 132-123 at Delta Center on October 25 to improve to 3-0 on the season. Lakers guard Luka Doncic scored 52 points on 17-of-30 shooting, including 8 of 18 from three-point range and 10 of 11 at the free-throw line, and added 10 assists and eight rebounds, as Los Angeles rallied from 18 points down, with Doncic hitting two late three-pointers to seal the win.
Utah raced to a 47-29 lead after the first quarter behind Ace Bailey, who scored 15 of his 17 points in the period and finished with 12 rebounds, and Lauri Markkanen, who added 12 first-quarter points. Doncic scored 17 of the Lakers' first 25 points. Austin Reaves scored 15 points in the second quarter as Los Angeles tightened its defense, forced a string of turnovers and erased the deficit before halftime; Doncic's stepback three with 4.7 seconds left in the half gave the Lakers their first lead at 74-71. Doncic added 14 points in the third quarter, and Los Angeles led 103-100 entering the fourth. With 1:42 remaining, Doncic capped a 14-5 run with two three-pointers in 40 seconds to push the lead to 127-121, the second of them taking him to 50 points, and he closed the scoring with two free throws.
It was the 10th regular-season 50-point game of Doncic's career, tying Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for 11th most in NBA history and passing Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who have nine each. Doncic also became the fastest Laker to reach 3,000 points, doing so in 95 games, ahead of George Mikan (106) and Abdul-Jabbar (109). It was his third 50-point game as a Laker, passing the two each recorded by Wilt Chamberlain, Anthony Davis and Shaquille O'Neal and tying LeBron James for fifth most in franchise history. He is also the first Laker since 1963 to record at least 50 points and 10 assists in one game, joining Elgin Baylor and Jerry West as the only players in team history to do so. Lakers coach JJ Redick said that when Doncic is in a flow state he goes into showman mode and is performing on a stage, which is always fun to watch; Doncic said being able to step up and lift his team on the road meant everything to him.
Reaves finished with 29 points, and he and Doncic combined to go 21 of 24 from the free-throw line. Walker Kessler, traded by Utah to Los Angeles over the summer, scored two points with seven rebounds in his first game back in Utah. For the Jazz, Markkanen led the team with 28 points, Keyonte George had 24 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, and Jaren Jackson Jr. added 20 points. Los Angeles shot 49.4 percent from the field and made 20 of 47 three-pointers; Utah shot 48.9 percent and held a 51-30 rebounding advantage but could not protect an 18-point second-quarter lead.
