WINNIPEG, Canada — Jacob Fowler made 34 saves as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 on Sunday in the Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Princess Auto Stadium in Winnipeg, according to Reuters. Defensemen Lane Hutson and Kaiden Guhle scored in the second period and Cole Caufield had two assists in the NHL's 46th outdoor game and the 10th played in Canada.

After a scoreless first period in which Alex Newhook's short-handed breakaway was stopped by Stuart Skinner, Hutson opened the scoring at 7:19 of the second, redirecting Noah Dobson's centering pass at the far post. Guhle made it 2-0 at 11:04 with a wrist shot from the left point through traffic off a Caufield feed.

Isak Rosen cut the deficit to 2-1 at 15:24 of the third period, spoiling Fowler's shutout bid. Winnipeg went on a power play with 1:32 left and pulled Skinner for a 6-on-4 advantage but could not tie the game. Skinner made 19 saves for the Jets, who lost their fifth straight (0-3-2). Dawson Mercer made his Jets debut after arriving in Friday's trade involving goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Montreal improved to 6-3-2; Winnipeg fell to 4-4-3.
