Wild Beat Canucks 4-2: Quinn Hughes Scores on Power Play in Boo-Filled Vancouver Return, Adds Assist in Win

VANCOUVER — The Minnesota Wild beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 on Sunday night at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, as defenseman Quinn Hughes, returning to the building for the first time as a visitor since being traded away, scored once and added an assist to help Minnesota hold on amid a chorus of boos.

Boos echoed as Hughes stepped on the ice for warmups and again when his name was announced; hundreds of fans, many wearing Canucks jerseys with Hughes' name and No. 43, gathered around the glass, and one held a sign reading "And I thought I had commitment issues." According to The Associated Press, Hughes scored on a power play midway through the second period to make it 3-0, finishing with three shots in 26:10 of ice time.

Maxim Shabanov opened the scoring on a first-period power play, and Minnesota added two more goals in the second to lead 3-0. Kirill Kaprizov also had a goal and an assist, Bobby Brink scored once, and the Wild went 2-for-5 on the power play. Vancouver answered in the third period through Max Sasson and Brock Boeser, whose snap shot with 3:07 remaining, set up by Elias Pettersson and Jake DeBrusk, cut the deficit to 4-2 after Minnesota had added a third-period goal of its own. The Wild outshot the Canucks 34-18; Calvin Pickard made 16 saves for Minnesota and Leevi Merilainen made 30 for Vancouver.

Picked seventh overall by Vancouver in 2018, Hughes played six and a half seasons for the Canucks, recording 432 points in 459 games as the franchise's highest-scoring defenseman, and won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman in 2024. He was traded to Minnesota last December in a blockbuster deal that sent Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, defenseman Zeev Buium and a 2026 first-round pick to Vancouver; all three players dressed for the Canucks in this game. The loss extended Vancouver's winless run to 10 games, while Minnesota won the second half of a back-to-back after Saturday's 5-1 win at Seattle, with its road trip set to finish Tuesday at Utah.
