Storm Boelo Batters Britain: Two Men Killed by Falling Trees as Over 160,000 Properties Lose Power

LONDON — Storm Boelo swept across Britain on Sunday, October 25, killing two men, leaving more than 160,000 properties without power at one point, and causing flooding and transport disruption. Police Scotland said a 60-year-old man was struck by a falling tree on a minor road at Mid Kelton, near Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, at about 10:30 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene; police said there were no suspicious circumstances and a report would be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. The Metropolitan Police said a man in his twenties was killed in Finchley, north London, at about 12:40 p.m. when a tree fell on his car; in south-west London, two people were injured when scaffolding collapsed in the high winds, though their injuries were not believed to be serious.
The Energy Networks Association said about 161,400 properties were without electricity at 3 p.m. GMT on Sunday, while 677,300 customers had been reconnected since Storm Austen began on Friday, with repair crews still working in high winds. The storm brought gusts of up to 84 miles per hour, and the Met Office issued an amber wind warning for parts of Scotland until 9 p.m. on Sunday; seawater flooded the main streets and shops of coastal towns including Largs and Saltcoats, and floodwater covered a platform at Dalmarnock station in Glasgow. At Birmingham airport, a passenger plane veered off the runway after landing in high winds; airline Jet2 said the plane was quickly steered back and taxied to the stand, where all passengers disembarked safely. The Environment Agency issued 12 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected. Boelo is the second named storm to hit Britain this week, after Austen on Friday.
