Storm Boelo Leaves 25,000 Scottish Homes Without Power on Monday: Schools Shut and Two Men Dead

Monday, October 26, 2026 · World · GSM News

SCOTLAND — Tens of thousands of Scottish households remained without power on Monday after Storm Boelo, with schools closed or opening late and rail and road travel still disrupted. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said on Monday morning that around 25,000 of its customers remained without power, while around 70,000 had been reconnected; the company said it had restored power to two-thirds of affected customers and that repair teams had been out since first light working through faults.

At around 7 p.m. on Sunday, SSEN had reported around 38,000 customers still without power, with around 54,000 reconnected; SP Energy Networks (SPEN) reported around 4,500 customers still without power at 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, falling to around 1,500 by lunchtime on Monday, mainly across Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway, with more than 50,000 reconnected.

The storm battered Scotland with gusts of around 80 mph, triggering yellow and amber wind warnings. On Sunday, a 60-year-old man was killed by a falling tree in Dumfries and Galloway, and a man in his 20s died during the storm in north London. The Scottish Government's resilience room met on Sunday to assess the aftermath, and Social Justice and Housing Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville urged people to check official Met Office, transport and local authority information before travelling.

On the railways, Network Rail said most services would return to normal on Monday but advised passengers to check online before travelling; ScotRail said the vast majority of services were running on Monday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning for parts of Scotland for Tuesday.
