A fatal collision in Montclair, a city in San Bernardino County, California, on the night of October 24 left two bicyclists dead and two others injured after a car plowed into a Halloween group ride of about 30 cyclists. The Montclair Police Department said the suspected drunken driver fled the scene and was arrested at his home early the next morning.

Police said the collision occurred at about 10:39 p.m. on October 24 at the intersection of Kingsley Street and Tudor Avenue. The group was riding eastbound on Kingsley Street when a westbound 2021 Honda Accord struck several riders. A 25-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:44 p.m.; a 30-year-old woman was taken to a hospital, where she died of her injuries at 1:19 a.m. on Sunday; a third rider sustained major injuries and was in stable condition; and a fourth cyclist suffered a minor head laceration and declined further treatment. The names of the two people killed have not been released.

Witnesses told police the ride was a self-coordinated Halloween ride, not sponsored, organized or affiliated with the city of Montclair. KTLA reported that witnesses said one victim was dragged by the vehicle for more than a mile before being left in a residential neighborhood; the police department's statement did not address that detail.

Police identified the driver as Valentin Alberto Rodriguez, 38, a Montclair resident who fled after the collision. With help from witnesses, officers arrested him at his residence near the scene at about 2:40 a.m. on Sunday. Rodriguez was booked at the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of driving under the influence and causing injury or death, driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher and causing injury or death, felony hit-and-run involving death or permanent, serious injury, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The charges are allegations, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Montclair Police Department asked anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information to call 909-621-4771.
