New developments emerged on October 26 in an arson attack that took place in Miami-Dade County on October 24. According to an October 26 report by the New York Post, the 33-year-old victim, Nathaniel Devin Mathis, is being treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital with second- and third-degree burns covering more than 80 percent of his body; the hospital believes his chances of survival are slim, though his death had not been confirmed as of the report. The attack occurred near the courtyard of the former Annie Coleman housing development in northwestern Miami-Dade County, close to NW 63rd Street and NW 25th Avenue; when paramedics arrived at about 6 p.m. on October 24, they found Mathis unconscious and severely burned. Police allege that 45-year-old Tanisha Shelton, after arguing with Mathis for several hours, returned to the scene carrying a bucket of accelerant, borrowed a lighter from a witness, poured the accelerant over Mathis and set him on fire; when she then tried to leave, a witness stopped her with pepper spray, and police arrested her based on identifying information provided by witnesses. Shelton has been charged with attempted murder and arson causing great bodily harm; the charges have not yet been tried in court. Police said the cause of the argument between the two remains under investigation and the full sequence of events has yet to be released.
