Durham County Gives Away Free Green Light Bulbs Starting October 26 to Honor Veterans

Monday, October 26, 2026 · City · GSM News

Durham County will begin giving away free green light bulbs to residents on October 26 as part of the nationwide Operation Green Light for veterans, with residents lighting a green bulb on their porch or in a window during November to show respect for veterans. According to the county government's announcement, the free bulbs can be picked up Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the County Department of Veteran Services office at 201 North Roxborough Street, while supplies last, on a first-come, first-served basis. Operation Green Light is led by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers; now in its sixth year, the campaign grew out of an initiative launched by the New York State Association of Counties in 2021, and in 2025 a total of 412 counties in 44 states took part; this year the organizers have invited all 3,069 counties, parishes, and boroughs across the United States to join. NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase said that while a single green light is small, when thousands of counties light up at the same time in November it becomes a signal that society has not forgotten veterans' sacrifices. Durham County will also hold its 15th annual Veterans Day celebration in November, and residents can share photos of their green lights on social media using the campaign hashtag. Green bulbs can also be purchased at local hardware stores and large retailers.
