Philadelphia Chinatown 'Stitch' Plan Advances in Design; Phase One Design Funding Secured

Monday, October 26, 2026 · City · GSM News

From Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania: according to an October 23 update from the City of Philadelphia, the Chinatown "Stitch" project has made progress in community engagement and design, and design funding for Phase One is in place. The plan aims to reconnect the northern and southern parts of Chinatown historically divided by Interstate 676, by capping the highway between 10th and 12th streets with a park, and adding traffic safety improvements on Vine Street from 9th Street to Broad Street.

The city said funding from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, together with the city's matching funds, is sufficient to complete the Phase One design and bring the project to a "shovel-ready" state, so construction can begin once future construction funding is secured. The city is advancing the project in partnership with PennDOT and the Federal Highway Administration; since the start of 2026 it has held multiple community engagement events and public meetings to hear Chinatown residents and merchants, and the subsequent design will continue to incorporate community feedback.
