Tampa City Council District 7 Seat to Open; Interested Residents May Apply for the November 17 Appointment

Monday, October 26, 2026 · City · GSM News

The District 7 seat on the City Council of Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida, is about to open: incumbent Councilman Luis Viera will resign before midnight on November 2 to run for the Florida House District 67 seat, which is open because House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell is term-limited.

Under the city charter, the council must appoint a replacement within 30 days of the seat becoming vacant; the remaining six members will vote on the appointee on November 17, and voters will elect a permanent replacement in the city election next March. District 7 lies north of Busch Boulevard and covers Forest Hills, Terrace Park and University Square through New Tampa.

Applicants must have lived in Tampa and been registered voters for at least one year, and have lived in District 7 for at least six months, and must submit the city's official application form and a resume of no more than two pages. Viera has represented District 7 for ten years; his resignation was filed under Florida's resign-to-run law, and this council appointment will be the first time since 2022 that a member is seated without an election.
