Emergency Repairs Continue on Peoria's Knoxville Avenue After a Rain-Caused Slope Failure; Temporary Work Expected Done by Mid-November

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

PEORIA, Ill. — A stretch of Knoxville Avenue in Peoria remained under emergency repair on October 26, after days of heavy rain over the summer caused a slope failure. Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Paul Wappel said the failed section lies on Knoxville Avenue between the junction of West Inverness Street and North Picture Road and West North Lane; the heavy rain destabilized the slope, causing culvert and structural damage and damaging an Illinois American Water water main.

The water company has completed relocating its main, and the department is repairing the erosion and culvert damage and building temporary slope protection, a new temporary storm sewer and shoulder work to keep travel safe until the permanent project begins. The temporary work is expected to be complete by mid-November, depending on weather; Illinois Route 40 northbound at the site is currently down to one lane and will return to two lanes when the work is finished.

A larger permanent project is set to begin in early 2027, and the department hopes to complete it by the end of the 2027 construction season. The department reminds motorists to slow down and use caution in the work zone.
