Iowa High School Football Regular Season Ends as the Des Moines Register Releases Its Final Rankings on October 26

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Register released its final Iowa high school football rankings of the 2026 season on October 26, marking the official end of the regular season and the release of the playoff pairings. This edition ranks only Classes 5A, 4A and 3A, because the smaller classes began their playoffs in Week 9 while the larger schools' regular seasons ended only last weekend.
The top three in Class 5A are Johnston (8-1, a 49-0 win over Des Moines Roosevelt), Southeast Polk (8-1, 54-0 over Des Moines East) and Dowling Catholic (8-1, 43-0 over Marshalltown); Ankeny (7-2) is fourth. Class 4A is led by Cedar Rapids Xavier (9-0), with Sergeant Bluff-Luton (9-0) and Carlisle (9-0) second and third.
The rankings are based on regular-season records and last weekend's finale scores. The playoffs open this week, and the Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the pairings for each class.
