Justice Department to Send Monitors to Jefferson County, Kentucky, Polling Places on Election Day, County Clerk Announced October 26

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The U.S. Department of Justice will send personnel to monitor polling places in Jefferson County on Election Day, November 3, the Jefferson County Clerk's Office announced on October 26. Election monitoring itself is nothing new: the Justice Department monitored voting in 24 states during the 2022 midterm elections, and Jefferson County and Kenton County also hosted election monitors in 2024.
But the current Justice Department plans to expand the effort sharply. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said on social media in September that the department plans to send 1,000 federal election monitors to selected locations around the country, calling it the largest monitoring effort in the department's history.
Communities across the country have learned in recent days that the department will send monitors; in Indiana, Marion County and Lake County are also on the list. In-person early voting in Kentucky is currently under way.
