Containment of the Jackson County Woods Fire Rose to 60 Percent, While the Status of Threatened Structures Remains Unconfirmed

WADE, Miss. — A woods fire broke out in the Wade area of Jackson County on the afternoon of October 25; by 8:30 p.m. that evening, containment had risen from 25% in the afternoon to 60%, but the later condition of the threatened structures has not been confirmed. The fire was first reported just before 2 p.m. on October 25, in woods near Elmer Hamilton Road in the Wade area, north of Highway 614 and east of Highway 63. The Mississippi Forestry Commission responded alongside Jackson County Fire Rescue.
At 4 p.m., Forestry Commission representative Kevin Craft put the burned area at at least 10 acres; at 4:44 p.m., county emergency management director Earl Etheridge said a few structures were threatened and that Fire Rescue crews were protecting them. The reporting did not give the number or type of the threatened structures, nor confirm that any homes had burned, so 'structures threatened' should not be read as a finding that homes were destroyed.
As of the latest update on the evening of the 25th, containment had improved markedly, but the structures' later status, whether any threat remains and the cause of the fire have not been released and are under investigation.
