Missouri House District 160 Voters Will Elect a Representative on November 3, Ending More Than a Year Without Representation

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

Missouri voters in Newton County and parts of Jasper County will elect a new representative for Missouri House District 160 in the November 3 general election, filling a seat vacant since May 2025. The seat has been empty since former Representative Ben Baker left to become Missouri state director of USDA Rural Development, and the governor never called special elections for this or several other vacant districts.

The two candidates are Republican Cheryle Perkins and Democrat Angela Thomas. Perkins has served as Newton County assessor for 23 years; her campaign priorities include tax reform and improving the state's mental health facilities, and she says voters are most concerned about taxes and rural health care. Thomas, a retired salon owner and former chair of the Newton County Democrats, says the community deserves representation just as any other community would, and has criticized the governor for failing to call a special election.

Four other state House districts also became vacant last year and likewise never received a special election call. District 160 voters on November 3 will also decide several amendments, state Senate and House seats, and U.S. Senate and House seats.
