New Hampshire Senate Race Enters Final Sprint; Pappas Could Become the First Openly Gay U.S. Senator

Salem, Rockingham County, New Hampshire — New Hampshire's U.S. Senate race has entered its final sprint before Election Day on November 3, and the contest between Democratic candidate Chris Pappas and Republican candidate John Sununu has become one of the most closely watched races in the country. According to USA TODAY on October 25, if Pappas wins, he will become the first openly gay man in American history to serve as a U.S. senator; in 2018 he already became New Hampshire's first openly gay member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The two appeared together at a candidate forum in Salem in mid-October, where the issue of sexual orientation came up only once, when Sununu noted in his opening statement that as a U.S. senator in 2004 he had voted against banning same-sex marriage. Pappas's husband, Vann Bentley, often accompanies him at campaign events. Pappas was named by the Lugar Center one of the most bipartisan members of Congress in 2023, and he says he is running not to make history, but to serve his constituents.
