Trails at Two Oregon South Coast State Parks Close from October 26 for Disease Treatment and Habitat Protection

Port Orford, Curry County, Oregon — The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department announced that the Humbug Mountain State Park summit trail and the Cape Blanco State Park horse trail system will close starting October 26 for forest and habitat work, with the closures lasting about two to three weeks. The Humbug Mountain trail will close for about two weeks, during which crews will remove oak trees infected with sudden oak death across a 21-acre area and treat the stumps with herbicide to prevent resprouting, aiming to slow the spread of the disease and reduce wildfire risk; the trail is about 5.5 miles long, climbs 1,765 feet, and offers views over the ocean to the south.
The Cape Blanco horse trail system will close for about three weeks, for western lily habitat maintenance covering 34 acres. The department notes that the sudden oak death pathogen was first detected in Oregon in 2001 and has spread within Curry County, affecting private, state and federal land. The closures apply to the trails themselves, not to the parks as a whole, and visitors should check the latest closure scope before traveling.
