Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island — Rhode Island's Judicial Nominating Commission sent five names to Governor Dan McKee on October 23 for the soon-to-be-vacant position of chief judge of the District Court, with the list reported on October 26. The nominees include former Democratic state senator Stephen R. Archambault and sitting District Court judges James Caruolo, Mary McCaffrey, J. Patrick O'Neill and Debra Saunders. The commission made its choices after a public hearing and interview process; four of the nominees received the support of all eight commission members, McCaffrey received six votes, and Judge Colleen Hastings was not selected.

The seat is vacant because District Court Chief Judge Jeanne E. LaFazia is leaving the post. The District Court is Rhode Island's busiest court, handling about 60,000 cases a year, and its judges also oversee the veterans and mental health treatment courts, as well as small claims and landlord-tenant matters. The chief judge's starting salary is $232,907, and the appointment will be made by the governor from the list.
