Black Hills See Their First Snow of the Fall on October 26: Rain-Snow Mix Possible in Rapid City, Several Inches in the Hills

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

Rapid City and the Black Hills in Pennington County, South Dakota, saw their first sizable snowfall of this fall on October 26. According to the October 25 forecast, cold air moving south brought snow to the Black Hills, and Rapid City could see its first rain-and-snow mix of the season. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Bob Smerbeck said the Black Hills could receive several inches of snow. The National Weather Service forecast for Rapid City was relatively more conservative, projecting less than half an inch of accumulation in the city on October 26.

The difference between the two forecasts reminds travelers that mountain snowfall totals cannot be applied directly to nearby cities. The forecast also noted that snow falling while daytime temperatures are higher does not accumulate easily, while snow falling before sunrise and after sunset in the evening accumulates more readily. NOAA's Weather Prediction Center listed the Black Hills and northwestern South Dakota among the areas where snow could accumulate on October 26. The snowfall is part of a weather system affecting several states across the Rocky Mountains and the northern Plains at the same time, with snow also possible in eastern Wyoming, northwestern Nebraska and southwestern North Dakota. Authorities remind drivers to watch for reduced visibility and slippery surfaces on mountain roads, check the latest road conditions before setting out, and slow down when driving in the mountains.
