Hartford Ranked the Nation's Eighth-Largest 'Asthma Capital' as Experts Call on October 26 for Better Air Quality

HARTFORD, Conn. — State Senator Saud Anwar, chair of the Public Health Committee, joined representatives of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, the Sierra Club of Connecticut and other organizations at an event at 11:15 a.m. on October 26 in Room 1A of the Legislative Office Building to discuss Hartford's asthma problem. In the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's ranking of 100 U.S. cities, Hartford ranks as the eighth-largest 'Asthma Capital,' based on asthma emergency room visits, deaths from asthma and asthma prevalence; the city's asthma prevalence ranks fourth in the nation.
The American Lung Association also gave the city an F grade for high ozone days in its report. Participants discussed the health threat asthma poses to Hartford residents, the struggles of other environmental justice communities, and strategies to improve local and regional air quality. Environmental justice leader Dr. Mark Mitchell also attended.
Organizers said improving air quality will take joint efforts at the legislative, health and community levels; specific measures are still under discussion, and no new funding figures have been announced.
