Chicago, Cook County, Illinois — Nominating petitions for the Chicago mayoral election close at 5 p.m. on October 26, moving the February 23, 2027, mayoral election to its next stage. According to Fox 32 Chicago, incumbent Mayor Brandon Johnson has filed for re-election with about 33,000 voter signatures, far above the threshold of 12,500 valid signatures; when the filing period opened on October 19, 16 candidates had already declared. Johnson's team says the cranes rising across the city and falling crime are his campaign's headline achievements; challengers are focusing on municipal finances and public services. After the filing deadline, the petition challenge process begins the next day; if no candidate wins a majority of votes in the first round, a runoff will be held on April 6.
