The U.S. Marine Corps opened an MV-22B Osprey aircraft for free public viewing on October 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lawrence Regional Airport in Kansas. Marine Corps representatives were on site to explain the tiltrotor aircraft's performance and mission roles, and the event was announced by the City of Lawrence through social media. The MV-22B Osprey combines the vertical takeoff and landing capability of a helicopter with the fast cruising capability of a fixed-wing aircraft, and is a key Marine Corps asset for troop transport, logistics resupply and special missions; rarely seen up close, the open viewing drew many local families and aviation enthusiasts. Lawrence Regional Airport is in Lawrence, home of the University of Kansas; admission on the day was free, and visitors could view the aircraft up close on the apron and ask questions of the service members on site. Organizers reminded visitors to observe the airport's on-site safety guidance. The City of Lawrence said in its announcement that it hoped the open event would help residents better understand military equipment and missions, and that it was also an opportunity for the Marine Corps to interact with the local community.
