In the early hours of October 25, a major fire broke out at Lulu M. Ross Elementary School in Milford, Delaware, with flames at one point breaking through the roof as firefighters raised a three-alarm response. According to Brian Schade, chief deputy of the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office, the alarm came in at about 4 a.m.; the first firefighters on scene found the Kent Corridor already burning, and crews from Carlisle and Georgetown, among others, came to assist; the fire took about three hours to bring under control. The flames spread to the school's lobby, library and front office, causing "major" damage, and classrooms in the Kent Corridor and the New Castle Corridor were also "severely" damaged. No injuries have been reported so far, and the State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause. The Milford School District posted an update on social media after 9:30 a.m. on October 25, saying the district crisis team was meeting that day to discuss short- and long-term arrangements for the school's students and staff. Lulu Ross Elementary is one of three elementary schools in the district. Governor Matt Meyer posted that day that he was saddened, calling schools "the heart of a community," and said the state government is working with district leadership to help the community through; U.S. Representative Sarah McBride also posted condolences and thanked the firefighters for their response. Delaware Secretary of Education Cindy Marten said the Department of Education is working directly with the district to meet students' immediate needs, remove obstacles and ensure learning continues.
