Tucker, DeKalb County, Georgia — Katie Jereza, assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Electricity, visited Georgia on Oct. 26 to tour two power infrastructure projects under construction by Georgia Transmission Corporation and Oglethorpe Power Corporation. The itinerary included Georgia Transmission's Mid-East Georgia Reliability Project in Walton and surrounding counties, and Oglethorpe Power's Smarr Combined Cycle Power Plant in Monroe County. The Energy Department said the visit was meant to show how Georgia's electric cooperatives are investing in critical infrastructure to meet growing electricity demand and support long-term economic growth.

Jereza said during the tour that America's energy future will not build itself, and requires bold decisions, real investment and the resolve to turn plans into progress — and that what she saw in Georgia was exactly the key projects advancing the power Americans will rely on for decades. The Mid-East Georgia Reliability Project includes four new high-voltage transmission lines, two new substations and upgrades to existing infrastructure across Walton, Morgan, Oconee and Putnam counties, aimed at reducing line overload and outage risk and improving operating flexibility. Oglethorpe Power said the cooperative model makes project benefits serve local communities directly; specific in-service dates will be announced by the project sponsors.
