Indiana's 90th baby-box surrender takes place in Terre Haute; infant receiving care

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana — On the morning of Oct. 26, a newborn was safely and anonymously placed in a baby box installed at the Sugar Creek Township fire station in Terre Haute, the 90th such placement completed through a baby box in Indiana. First responders quickly arrived to care for the infant, who is now moving through the state adoption system toward a permanent family.

Baby boxes are equipped with round-the-clock monitoring and silent alarms; once an infant is placed inside, first responders are alerted immediately and rush to the scene. Indiana now has 152 baby boxes, and there are close to 490 nationwide. Bloomington has two boxes. Indiana's Safe Haven Law allows parents to legally and anonymously surrender a newborn within 30 days of birth at designated safe-haven locations, including baby boxes.

The sponsoring organization said in a news release that the baby-box system was created to give parents in difficult circumstances a safe, legal option and to prevent infants from being abandoned in unsafe places. The Terre Haute placement is another example this year of Indiana's baby-box system at work, and the organizations called on the public to learn about the Safe Haven Law and use this legal channel when necessary.
