Elmira, Chemung County, New York — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Oct. 26 that the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and emergency food assistance organizations have received $941,297 in state funding. The grant comes from New York's program providing local essential supplies; statewide, $8.3 million in infrastructure grants went to 59 organizations to improve food storage, transportation and distribution. Among them, the Catholic Charities Food Bank of the Southern Tier received $400,000 to purchase a refrigerated box truck and expand delivery capacity to rural communities. The food bank is headquartered in Elmira and works with more than 300 partner organizations, serving six counties: Chemung, Steuben, Schuyler, Broome, Tioga and Tompkins. The state said the grants will help food banks add equipment, reduce food waste and get fresh, nutritious food to more families facing food insecurity. The Corning Council for Assistance and Information for the Disabled also received $97,502 to purchase a refrigerated food transport vehicle supporting community nutrition and food pantry delivery programs at independent living centers.
