The Nature Conservancy transfers historic Maltese Cross brand registrations to Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library

Medora, Billings County, North Dakota — The Nature Conservancy and the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library announced on Oct. 26 that the Conservancy has transferred to the library the historic Maltese Cross livestock brand registrations tied to Roosevelt's North Dakota ranch years. The transfer includes one of Roosevelt's three original Maltese Cross brand registrations, plus 32 other related historic registrations, which the library will now steward. The registrations' history traces back to Roosevelt's ranching years in North Dakota. The transfer was timed just before Roosevelt's Oct. 27 birthday. The Maltese Cross is one of the most recognizable symbols of Roosevelt's ranch years; his experience hunting and ranching in the North Dakota badlands shaped the conservation philosophy of his presidency, protecting America's lands, waters and wildlife. The Nature Conservancy said these brand registrations connect to the years that shaped Roosevelt's conservation vision and remind people that land conservation matters as much today as it did more than a century ago.
