Southern Slopes of Alaska's Brooks Range Brace for Heavy Snow; Forecasters Warn of Up to 16 Inches

The National Weather Service office in Fairbanks issued a winter weather warning on October 26: the southern slopes of Alaska's central Brooks Range are expected to receive heavy snow, with accumulations of 8 to 16 inches and wind gusts up to 35 mph, through Monday night. The Atigun Pass area is separately forecast to get 3 to 6 inches with gusts reaching 55 mph.
The Weather Service warned that blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility, to below one quarter mile at times in places, and that travel could be very difficult. Drivers were urged to check National Weather Service alerts and state highway reports before setting out, particularly on mountain routes and the Dalton Highway.
The winter storm is affecting seven U.S. states on October 26: beyond Alaska, the Rockies and northern Plains states of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota also face early-season snow, with slushy conditions possible around the Black Hills on Monday.
