Bozeman Health Launches Southwest Montana's First Neurosurgery Program, Ending Long Trips Out of State for Brain and Spine Care

Monday, October 26, 2026 · States · GSM News

Bozeman Health announced on October 26 the launch of its first neurosurgery program, opening a Neurosurgery and Spine Clinic at Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center in Bozeman, Montana. The program gives patients across the system's eleven-county region in southwest Montana access to brain, advanced spine and complex neurosurgical care without traveling out of state, often to Utah, as they previously had to do for both emergency and planned care.

The program is led by two board-certified neurosurgeons who joined Bozeman Health this year: Dr. Joseph Sramek, who has more than 25 years of experience and previously chaired the Department of Surgery at Logan Health in Kalispell, and Dr. James Kalyvas, who came from New Orleans, where he served as medical director of neurosurgical spine at Tulane University School of Medicine. Orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Ben Smith and several advanced practice providers round out the team.

In its first months the team has already handled critical cases. Three-year-old Milo arrived at the emergency department after a playground swing struck him in the head, causing life-threatening bleeding on the right side of his brain; instead of waiting for a transfer to Utah, surgeons performed an emergency craniotomy locally, and the boy has recovered to his active, playful self. This month Kalyvas also performed Bozeman's first TOPS motion-preserving spine procedure, with the patient walking the day of surgery and home the next day. CEO Kathryn Bertanay called adding neurosurgery a significant milestone for the community and the state.
