Woman Injured After Jumping from Fifth Floor as Fire Sweeps Pennsauken Apartment Building in New Jersey

A three-alarm fire swept the fifth floor of the Cooper River Plaza Apartments in Pennsauken, Camden County, New Jersey, in the early hours of October 26. Firefighters arriving at about 2:15 a.m. at the 14-story building on the 2400 block of McClellan Avenue found a well-advanced blaze on the fifth floor, and one woman was hospitalized after jumping from a fifth-floor window; her condition was not disclosed.
Pennsauken Fire Chief Jonathan Hutton said it took firefighters approximately 50 minutes to extinguish the blaze, and no other injuries were reported. Pennsauken police officers who arrived first assisted firefighters in completing evacuations of the building, which overlooks North Park Drive and Cooper River Park.
Forty residents were displaced by the fire, occupants of fifth-floor apartments, and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The Pennsauken and Camden County fire marshal's offices are investigating the cause of the fire.
